She could sing anything . . . and make it sound like it was the only music that mattered – Richard Harrington, The Washington Post

What a wonderful world

A couple of friends of mine recently posted a video on Facebook that is very close to my heart. It’s by a singer that had, in the words of Richard Harrington, “the voice of an angel”. That video was “Fields of Gold” and that singer is Eva Cassidy.

I’d never heard of Eva Cassidy until about five years ago while I was on a trip to Australia. My dear friend Ross visited me at my mum’s house and brought his guitar along with him. He started strumming some stuff (I have to say he did a fantastic Johnny Cash-esque version of “In the city”!) and I sang along as best I could. And it felt great and made me realise how much I missed singing. Then he asked, “Do you know Eva Cassidy?” to which I answered, “No, I’ve never heard of her”. He then started playing “Songbird”. I’d heard “Songbird” on the soundtrack of “Love Actually”. But when Ross played it and “Somewhere over the rainbow” and I started singing along, I felt as if I was transported to a place where the clouds were far behind me. I vowed then and there that I had to hear, and sing, more.

So it was Eva Cassidy that restored my love for singing. She was a singer who not only sang a song, she sang a story. The emotion in her songs, even after having listened to them countless times in the past five years, still brings me to tears. From “Autumn Leaves” to “I Know You by Heart” to “Fields of Gold” to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to “Who Knows Where the Time Goes”, no other singer can touch me as she does, no other singer has the voice of this angel. God bless her.
